This brings me to a question for the readers this week: What do you think of lane conditions in general? Should they be easy, or should bowling make the game tougher by using pro conditions or something similar as a standard in league competition?

With the PBA coming next weekend, we should talk about professional bowlers themselves. Most people don’t realize just how talented they are. Compared to many local “hot shots” the pros are simply a cut above. While the “hot shots” may average up to 240 on a house condition, they likely will average 190 or less on professional conditions. Why? Well, much in the same way that Augusta National differs from Gray Eagle, so does the condition for the pros. The way the oil is applied will amplify even the tiniest of errors in the delivery.

But the best thing about the pros is how friendly and approachable they are. Unlike golf, basketball, baseball, football, etc, you can interact with these pros and ask them for advice. They are usually flattered to see such support and they absolutely love interacting with fans in the Pro-Am. So please, if you can participate and support the event in any way, please do, so we may host it another year.

Since we just mentioned the release, we will now talk about something that is crucial to helping create a smooth release: the knee bend.

When we slide to deliver the ball, it’s important to keep our slide foot straight and allow our knee to bend and travel forward as we release the ball (only a few inches). This movement of the knee helps create a “flat spot” in the release that helps the ball land like an airplane. It is also important that the knee remains under the chin and the head doesn’t get out in front of the toes. If this occurs, we have broken down the natural pendulum of the swing. The properly executed knee bend also contributes to good balance. Good luck and good bowling!

Thank you for reading - if you bowl in our PBA Experience League this summer, we will be giving free tips on how to play the lanes and free bowling every night after we finish the league. It’s a great way to learn!

We also have many other summer leagues to choose from; check out our “Leagues” tab to see which one interests you. Remember, if you join any summer league, you will receive two free games of bowling every day all summer!

This week we will talk about possibly the most critical thing in bowling: the release. Most bowlers squeeze the ball way too much when they bowl. This causes inconsistencies in the release point. Some shots are released too soon and some shots are released too early. The correct grip pressure under most circumstances is to have just enough grip to keep from dropping the ball. From there, we are using gravity to keep the ball in the swing arc and pull the ball out of our hand in a smooth, consistent manner.

In an effort to help all this occur properly, it is also very important to bend at the knees during the delivery, and not at the waist. Bending over at the waist may be the #1 reason for shots pulled off target.

Good luck and good bowling!

If you are like most people, you are ready to get outside and soak up the sun this summer. Bowling may be the furthest thing from your mind, but if you’re looking to improve your game, summer is the best time. With great prices on bowling specials and the opportunity to bowl on PBA lane conditions, you can really improve with just a little practice. One thing that I have tossed around is having an evening where we set up the lanes a certain way, and we have a clinic on how to attack different patterns as well as offer some tips on the physical part of the game. If you are interested in any of this, please email me at kevinwalter@bowlatpinheads.com.

This week we will talk about more about lane conditions.

(On our house lane condition) Most of you may not know that if you lay the ball down anywhere right of the 2nd arrow, the ball will hook way more than a shot thrown on or left of the 2nd arrow. Also, if you throw the ball close to the gutter, it will hook even more. So don’t be afraid of the gutter! Too many of you only want to throw the ball over the 2nd arrow! This is because the oil is applied primarily from the 2nd arrow on the left to the 2nd arrow on the right. However, if you lay the ball down left of the 2nd arrow and swing it to the outside boards near the gutter, your ball may not hook back. This is because you have laid the ball down in the oil and it was in a skid for the first 20+ ft of your delivery. This makes it very difficult to hook back.

The rule of thumb (right-handers): if your ball is not hooking up to the pocket enough, move your stance and delivery to the right (small amounts: 1-3 boards at a time). If your ball is coming in too much, then move left with the same system.

Thank you for reading.
